Vintage Charge the Checkerboard Vols Heavyweight Tee
The tradition of painted checkerboard end zones at Tennessee started with a building on UT’s campus. Ayres Hall was built in 1921 with a subtle checkerboard design incorporated into the top of the structure. Back then, there was a clear view of the building from Shields-Watkins Field, predecessor to Neyland Stadium. When the Volunteers were on offense and facing Ayres Hall, legendary Volunteers football coach General Neyland would say things to his players like, “Charge the checkerboard!” and, “don't stop until time runs out or until you reach the checkerboard. And once you get there, get there again."
