Nevada adopted the nickname when the football program began in 1896, after the state flower, and used the name until 1922. That year, a local writer described the team as a “pack of wolves,” and the team soon became known as the Desert Wolves. Now, of course, Nevada athletics teams are known as the Wolf Pack.
