In 1922, Illinois broke ground on a new football stadium, which opened just over a year later. Memorial Stadium, built in tribute to Illini students who died in World War I, was then officially dedicated on Oct. 18, 1924, before Illinois played (and defeated) Michigan in their Homecoming game. This design honors 100 years of Memorial Stadium’s official dedication, and the century of Fighting Illini football played there.
